AUTHOR'S NOTES :
I was really on the fence about adding this show to my 'Girl Power Recommendations' list, to be honest. For the longest time, too. While I was impressed by the diversity amongst the few female characters in the show, the sexual objectification of one character in particular—Naomi Nagata—was SO blatant and frequent I couldn't bring myself to recommend this show.
In fact, there was this one scene that sickened me to my stomach because of how far out of their way they went to have her—head to toe—FULLY NUDE in a scene curled up next to her lover—James Holden—who was not only comfortably splayed out but also snugly covered up by a blanket...
"Then why the heck are you recommending this show? Are they paying you or something?"
First, nobody's paying me. Nobody. Ever. I'm forever broke so no paycheck from SyFy or Amazon for me. ^^;;
Second, while I love the character Chrisjen Avasarala, she alone wasn't enough—in my opinion, anyway—to even BEGIN nullifying the sexist depiction of Naomi ( who is, otherwise, a well-crafted character: a highly proficient space engineer and part of a marginalized community who has her strengths and her flaws. ).
The introduction of such powerful characters like Gunnery Sergeant Roberta 'Bobbie' Draper, Reverend Doctor Anna Volovodov, and Camina Driver convinced me to recommend the show. Because DESPITE all of Naomi's gratuitous nudity—which is tragically unfortunate—this show does, in fact, have at least FIVE very different, powerful, well rounded female characters...
In my opinion, anyway. ^^;;
