DC COMICS / WARNER BROTHERS [2018] action / adventure / fantasy / science fiction / super heroes

Gold Star!

AUTHOR'S NOTES :

Personally, I have a grudge against DC Comics as a company* and so I wasn't at all inclined to see "Aquaman". Obviously I did eventually go see this film and hot DAMN am I glad my dad asked me to join him!

DC Comics next to never hits the mark when it comes to feminism, but when they do—KAPOW!—they knock it out of the damn park! First "Wonder Woman" and now, somehow, "Aquaman".

"How can this film be a 'Girl Power' rec if it's about a male super hero?" one might ask.

For TWO amazing reasons. ;)

First, PRINCESS MERA

Oh. My. God. Be still my beating heart! Princess Mera is everything my precious Disney Princess Ariel is—and SHOULD still be, I'm looking at you "Ralph Breaks the Internet"*!—and so SO MUCH more!

THIS is how you do secondary female characters, people! They are NOT just decorative.

God, I can't believe that this film not only met one of my personal criteria regarding female representation but nearly ALL of them!

  • She significantly contributed, and is therefore central, to the predominant plot line. CHECK!

  • She successfully and independently accomplished MULTIPLE tasks & solved MULTIPLE problems. CHECK! CHECK! CHECK! and CHECK!

  • She is NOT a damsel in distress. CHECK! -> In fact, she only finds herself in serious need of rescue just once in the entire duration of the film's story line, but her rescuer is NOT our manly protagonist, Aquaman, but his MOM! XD -> Other than that, she saves Aquaman's butt about as many times as he saves hers. Actually, I'm pretty sure she rescued him a LOT more times than he rescued her. A LOT more. <3

  • She has primary objectives independent from those of the male protagonist. -> She's a princess, a person born into privilege who somehow has the capacity NOT to accept new information at face value. A trait that 100% conflicts with how she'd been raised to think and behave. She fact checks, people. She FACT CHECKS! She puts the information in its original context AND THEN acts accordingly, even if it means... " It’s my family and my nation, and I’ve turned my back on both. Sometimes we have to do what’s right, even if your heart aches against it. " CHECK! CHECK! CHEEEeeeEEEeeeEEECK~!

Second, QUEEN ATLANNA

Queen Atlanna is the cherry on the cake.

After watching "Ant-Man and the Wasp" I like to joke that the movie is Michelle Pfeiffer's audition to be a Jedi master in the Star Wars Universe, because DAYUM Janet Pym is a BAMF!

Now Nicole Kidman's Queen Atlanna gives Janet Pym BAMF-ness a run for her money. <3
