Calgary Expo 2015: Hayley Atwell
Updated: May 18, 2020
After the Harold Perrineau panel ended, my mom and I headed over to the Corral to wait for Gwendoline Christie’s panel to start. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we managed to catch the later part of Hayley Atwell’s panel. Yay for happy accidents! :D We sat down as Hayley Atwell talked about a fight scene in "Agent Carter" that took place in a diner. Apparently, when she ducked the director stopped filming to tell her “You're not in a club! You're not dancing!” Ironically, after that she had the Nicki Minaj song, "Anaconda", stuck in her head for the rest of the shoot. XD I’m going to jot down some of the stories he shared in point form here because my memory is terrible and I need to get this down before I forget:
When they first started shooting "Agent Carter", Hayley was approached by a producer who told her, “It's on you now. You set the bar.” No pressure. None at all. Poor Hayley. :(
I’m not sure what question prompted this lovely speech, but she said ( I’m paraphrasing, I’m ALWAYS paraphrasing, because my memory sucks )... “We need better female representation in media. Because we come in all shapes and sizes, from all races and cultures, with all kinds of strengths and weaknesses... I think Peggy Carter is a step forward because she's strong and makes mistakes and feels... She's real. We need more women that we can relate to.”
She played Ella's birth mother in Disney's new live action adaptation of "Cinderella". She didn’t know too much about how she would be costumed before filming. They didn’t tell her that she'd be wearing a blonde wig but that was fine, Hayley didn't mind. They also didn’t tell her they'd be bleaching her brows and that... Well, that was going to be an issue because, at the time, she was also performing in a stage production and she would be flying back and forth between both jobs. But what's done is done. Back and forth she went, filming "Cinderella" in a blonde wig with bleached brows in one location then flying to a second location where she colored in her brows before performing a stage play. Rinse and Repeat. XD
She praised "Frozen" for being feminist and progressive and...
She then started taking questions from the audience and one of those questions was ”Why are you so perfect?” Hayley said, “You should ask my mother.” Of course I thought that she was kindly passing the credit on to her mother. That is, until she added, “She'd say that I’m not perfect, and I’m not, but that's really sweet of you to say.” Both LOL and Awwww! <3
Turns out that "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was her first time filming an American television show. What she found to be different was the pace: fast and efficient. She would get the script the night before and next day it’s go! Go! Go!
”Who would win? Melinda, Natasha or Peggy?” Hayley’s answer was perfect! “I think they'd have a good go at it, get hurt each other a lot and tire themselves out. Then they’d burst out laughing and go to a pub for cocktails.”
Hayley did provide one "Avengers: Age of Ultron" spoiler: Hayley got Joss [Whedon] drunk one night. XD After that short—but true—spoiler, she started tell us about the director. “Joss is self-deprecating. He'd come in wearing jeans and a tee-shirt and be like 'Hey. Hey.' There is nothing arrogant about the guy. He just really loves what he does. He's a huge fan of the franchise.” <3
”What are your favorite and least favorite scenes to film in "Captain America: The First Avenger"?” Hayley: That’s a tough one. Moderator: I think we covered your favorite. *referencing earlier question about scene with Chris Evans’ abs* Hayley: *dreamily* Umm yes... Though the kiss was nice too. XD Hayley: But for your question, do you remember the scene where Cap runs down a Hydra agent barefoot? I had nothing to do and was SO bored. *So she kicked off her heels and put on Cap’s boots and walked around.* Hayley: NOBODY noticed. They must think that my legs look horrendous normally because with the boots on they were like giant hams so how else could no one know this? Hayley: That was my favorite scene. :D
