This is a list of celebrities, historical figures, & fictional characters in pop culture who are canonically, that is to say VERIFIED* members of marginalized minority groups (my primary focus being on LGBTQA+ representation, though I'll do my best to make note of representation of other marginalized groups).
I'm compiling this list because I believe representation matters.
So many people, myself included, struggle to find a proper reflection of ourselves in popular culture WHEN WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! Popular culture, whether we like it or not, is a mirror of our society & its values. While a lot of us have no problem finding themselves in the mirror, some of us find our reflections being constantly distorted in the most unflattering ways while others can't seem to find their reflections at all. How can someone find their place in today's world if they themselves can't be seen as being part of it?! Much less if everyone around them can't be bothered to include them in the picture.
Everyone should be able to enjoy fiction in ALL of its forms!
With that said, I hope everyone can enjoy the show. <3
